On 1 June 1742 John Mitchell of York, mariner, purchased from David and Martha Lawson for £600, 100 acres in Wells at the mouth of Mill Creek up to the highest part of Rocky Hill.[5] John built his house here as well as a garrison.

John signed a petition to create a separate township 5 Apr. 1749 and again as an agent from Wells 6 June 1749.[6] He then signed a Kennebunk petition for a separate township 30 May 1750.[7] He signed a Wells petition for shire-town status 27 May 1761.[8]

John also built the first wharf on the west side of the Kennebunk River where the first ship built on this River was constructed by John Bourne in 1755. This ship was owned by Richard and Nathaniel Kimball and Robert Elliot of Salem and was of about 80 tons. There is some evidence to show that Stephen Titcomb and John built the schooner Endeavor in 1747 at this spot. John was taxed in 1750 for £3/10 by the town of Wells. In 1751 he was elected constable.

John joined the new church of the second parish in Wells in Jan. 1751. At the first meeting 6 Aug. 1751 he was chosen clerk and on 25 Aug. he was chosen one of three assessors for the church rate. He also was involved on a committee to consult with the minister as to his ordination and in 1755 he was on a committee to buy a piece of land for a parsonage.

31 Aug. 1759: “Capt John Mitchell of the sloop Prosperous, left from Halifax, arrived at the Port of Piscataqua, from the Piscataqua Custom House list of 29 August”. [9]

28 Aug. 1761: “Capt John Mitchell of the sloop Adventure, left from the Port of Piscataqua, sailing to Rhode Island, from the Piscataqua Custom House list of 27 August.”[10]

On 16 Jan. 1775 John along with Stephen Larrabee were a "committee of donations for the Poor of the town of Boston" giving 26 3/4 cords of wood by way of Capt. Ebenezer Hovey. On 23 Jan. 1775 John was on "a committee to prepare instructions to guide the actions of the delegate (Ebenezer Sayer) in Congress". He was on the Committee of Correspondence and Safety on 18 Mar. 1776. During the collection of clothing to be sent to the Continental Army in Apr. 1778 he gave one pair of stockings and one pair of shoes.

John is listed in the 1798 tax list with three pieces of land in Arundel totaling 170 acres and worth $1300.00 and a house in Arundel worth $650 (probably our John) and 99 acres in Wells worth $1000 and a house in Wells (probably NS John- see below) worth $550.[11]

“John Mitchell of Wells… came in Oct. 1792 on horse back on a visit to his friends”. A tally made during that visit of his 63 living children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren included his children Dummer, Samuel, Joanna Kimball, Jotham, Mary Hill (deceased), Daniel, and John, their 47 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. [12]

From a letter to Frank Littlefield dated 19 Jan. 1935 George Gillpatrick quotes: "I am going to send you an exact copy of a letter that I received from Isaac M. Emery of K. lower Village the year is not given but it was late 1890 or early 1900

Mr. Geo. A Gilpatric
Kennebunk port Apr. 3

Dear Sir
Your lately received If I could meet you I could give you the whole history of the Mitchell family in this vicinity John Mitchell came here about 1736 bought two hundred acres of land of Sir William Pepperill on Kennebunk River (his house still standing) His third son Samuel was born Dec 20 1742 and settled at Cat Mousam on the farm that Charles Webber used to live… Samuel had a sister Lydia born Nov 13 1744. I well remember your Neighbor Elisha he decended from this family. Another John Mitchell lived one mile from Mousam Village on the road to the branch. He was a Nova Scotian was brought here from there in 1756 and I well remember Cooper Mitchell as they used to call him by one of his decendants. N.S. John Sen. Had 13 children Yours truly Isaac M Emery". [13]

Mr. Emery has some of his facts wrong concerning the land purchase on the Kennebunk River, however, it makes interesting reading.
