About John Montgomery

Note about place and date of birth

Shipboard manifests do not say where John came from, and give a birth date if 1797. An exact 1792 birth date and place of birth in County Fermanagh circulates in FindAGrave and in web trees. If accurate, it implies that John's father and mother were William Montgomery and Jane Wright, who married in County Monaghan.

Alternatively, the family that arrived in 1811 in Philadelphia could describe another family headed by William and Jane, from County Armagh. If so, the birthplace of John would have to be wrong.

The traditional treatment for this family is summarized in the profile of father William Montgomery .

Life

John Montgomery was born in Ashbrooke, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, in 1792. His parents were William Montgomery and Jane Wright, daughter of Samuel Wright of Ematris Parish, County Monaghan. John had an elder brother, James, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1798 along with many (20+) cousins, including Thomas Wright, who married and settled in Berlin, New Jersey. In 1811, John and his parents also emigrated to Philadelphia.

John soon left Philadelphia and headed to the western end of Pennsylvania. There, in Washington County, John met and married Eve Keck. The family made its way to Missouri, stopping in Ohio, and paving the way for later emigrations by many County Monaghan cousins, including some of the Camerons and some of the Wrights.

John died in Jackson Township, Andrew County, Missouri, in 1875.
