About John Leo Moore
John was a small quiet man with pale blue eyes and dimples. Born in a large family, he was close to his sister Anna, who died at age 27 in 1921. He was sent to St. John's Business College to study. When finished, he rebelled and wanted to work on the docks/boats instead of an office! An argument with his famly ensued and he was found unconscious at the bottom of the stairs by Anna. He then ran away from home, he was about 16, and was not seen again for seven years, after WWI. He worked at various jobs, mostly in the Great Lakes and Ohio. He was a farmer, fruit picker, stoker and fireman on the Great Lakes boats.
Lonely and disgruntled at 20, he joined the Army, hoping to die a hero. He was found in France by his brother Ed who pursuaded him to write to his mother. Soon packages of cookies and sweaters arrived and a message to come home after the war. He served with the Army in France until 1919, when he returned home.
He worked as a mechanic (Con Edison) on Fords. Brother Michael gave him a Civics book and told him he was taking the test for policeman. He resisted, but took the test - and the job- anyway. claimed he hated being a cop, yet need to support his family and studied at Delahanty's and rose to Lieutenant before retiring.
He seemed very calm, claiming "Noone was worth sacrificing your peace of mind"! He sufered from duodenal ulcers, but would not stick to a bland diet and had episodes of severe pain.
Appointed to NYPD January 10, 1921, pensioned February 28, 1954 at 57 years of age. He had been very ill with ulcers and other medical problems a few years before retirement. He served 33 years on the NYPD.
Also lived at 95-56 111 St. Richmond Hill, where he died of a heart attack in 1968.
