About John Morgan

Born 6 December 1829 - Died 1 May 1916

John Morgan and his younger brother William, sailed from Gillingham, Dorset, England on the ‘Berkshire’, of 583 tons (Captain J Whyte and Surgeon Superintendent J H Horne) on 7 October 1849, and arrived at New Plymouth in January 1850.

He married Mary Elvins Faull in 1853 and they had a family of six sons and four daughters, who were brought up in the Wanganui District. They moved to Wanganui in 1857, farming at Kai Iwi and in 1861 bought 700 acres from Dr Peter Wilson. The property was situated three miles south of Wanganui, to the west of Kaitoke, and called ‘Newton Lees’.

He retired to ‘Newtonvilla’, Durie Hill in 1901 and was then able to indulge in his hobby of pen and ink drawings. Mrs Morgan died in 1905 and John on 1 May 1916.
