About John Morrow

John was born in Cobourg, ON. He graduated from Trinity College with a law degree. A new village in Manitoba needed an attorney so he traveled by train as far as it went in those days and walked the rest of the way to Boissevain, Manitoba in the early 1880s. He drew up the Village Council charter. In Dec 1885 the train line reached the town. John built the first house in that year. He was chosen as the first village solicitor in 1899 at a salary not to "exceed $50.00." In 1901 he served on the Council- and the main tasks that year was construction of sidewalks & drainage ditches." In 1910 he sold the lot for a town hall for $1,000. A band was organized and he provided instruments. In 1929 he served on the board of the cemetery and laid out the plots. When the automobile was invented he bought a car load and placed them out in front of his fine house ( bought from Sears & Roebuck catalog) on Sunday morning as people walked to church.

He married Florence White, the daughter of a shoe store merchant in Peterborough, ON in1896, most likely met via his father who was a leather merchant on Cobourg, ON.
