About John Nelson Baird
He was given the nam "Nelson" for his mother's family. She was related to Thomas Nelson, the Signer of the Declaration of Independence.
H was born in Buckingham County, Va but went with his parents to Blount County, Tennessee where he married Rebecca Stone. In 1818, he moved with his wife, and then 3 children to Limestone County, Alabama where he reared his family (five children in all).
In 1839, when the first government work was done in Muscle Shoals on the Tn River, he went there to work and was killed. He was burried on his farm. His sons bought a monument and had it placed on his grave, which is on the Black or Ripley farm near Ripley School.
