Obituary Buchanan newspaper (BCB) 1 Mar., 1889 Uncle John Newell died at his home here, on Tuesday evening, Feb. 19th after an illness of nearly one year. He was born near Cleveland, Ohio, July 11, 1812, and came to Buchanan county over thirty years ago (1859 dwebb). He was father of eleven children, ten of whom, with his widow, survive (2/w Lucy Elizabeth Gay, Taylor, Newell. The funeral was held at the M.E. church, on Friday at 12 o'clock, and was largely attended. Just before time for the funeral a telegram was received from one of Mr. Newell's sons, saying that he would arrive here on Saturday, so the interment was postponed until 3 p.m. of that day. Five sons and one daughter were present at the burial of their father.

We are almost daily reminded that "life is fleeting" for during the week past the "grim messenger" has claimed two victims for his own. In two homes there is a vacant chair. Tuesday evening, the 19th about noon o'clock, uncle John Newell peacefully breathed his last. He had been prostrated by illness many months, and his death was not unexpected. His mind was clear to the last. By his genial kindly manner he had won hosts of friends. A wife and honorable sons and daughters mourn his loss. The former, who has been the most untiring nurse for many months, exclaimed, "What have I to live for now?" Mr. Newell was 75 years of age. The funeral service was conducted at the M. E. church by Rev. Brentsall Friday at 2 p.m. The remains were not interred till Saturday, as John Jun., of Kansas failed to reach here in time for the funeral arriving Saturday morning.
