About John Nisbet, III
Son of John Nisbet II and Mary Osborne of NC. He married Harriet Cooper on 25 May 1815 in Hancock Co., GA. Harriet was the niece of Penelope Cooper Nisbet, wife of John's brother, Dr. James Nisbet.
Oconee Hill Cemetery property was originally part of his estate. He came to Athens from Statesville, NC in 1813 with his older brother, Dr. James Nisbet. He was a Principal in 2 of Athens earliest factories. Included was the Whitehall Mill, founded in 1830 by John and three additional prominent Athenians, William Dearing, Abraham Walker, and Judge Augustin Clayton, and a New Englander named John Johnson. The first large scale river powered mill in Clarke county, it was originally given the name Athens Mfg Co. and later called the Georgia Factory.

Sarah Evalina Nisbet, b. 27 Nov 1822, Athens, Clarke Co., GA, d. 25 Aug 1884, Athens, Clarke Co., GA. married Martin L. Smith- both are buried at Oconee Hill.
