About John North, of Farmington

Not the son of John Dudley North, 3rd Baron Lord North of Kirtling & Frances North. Not the same as Hon. John North, Esq., of Kirtling

John North, Sr.

  • Born about 1615 in England
  • Death 3 Mar 1690 (aged 78–79) Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA
  • Parents: unknown
  • Husband of Mary (Bird) North — married before 1641 in Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts

He sailed for New England on the Suzan and Ellen when he was just 20 years old, settling in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He married Hannah Bird (1633 - 1662), daughter of Thomas Bird, in 1640 and moved to Hartford (Farmington) by 1652.

Disputed Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/North-32

This John North is NOT John North, born Feb 27 1612 in Kirtling, Cambridgeshire, England.[1] This information as well as John-North-Kirtling's parents (Dudley North) have been removed from this profile. See "Research Notes" below.

John North was born in 1615, and died about 1691.

He perhaps first married an Unknown woman.[citation needed]

Later (by1640/1), he married Hannah (or Mary) Bird, daughter of Thomas Bird and Mary Belden.[2]

Mary (Hannah?) was a first wife of John North of Farmington, Connecticut.(Depending on source, the name keeps flipping between Mary or Hannah Bird who married John North; In the distribution of Thomas North's estate, 1662, Goodwife Northe and Hanna Scott are mentioned. One source definitely mentions Mary as marrying John North.)

Research notes

Documentation from the colonies says that John North was born 1615. The ancestry of John North who immigrated in 1635 has not been proven. Many are saying that he is the son of Sir John Dudley North, 3rd Baron, 1581-1666 and his wife Frances Brocket. I have seen no proof of this. Written biographies suggest that he is originated from Yorkshire, England. That is the location of origin for most of the passengers who embarked on the same voyage in 1635 on the "Susan and Ellen".

I hope the following will finally put Dudley North to rest.

From LDS FHL film #416757-Item 3, Transcripts of parish registers of London, St. Bartholomew the Less, London, England, 1547-1837 by Challen, W. H. (William Harold) "Marriages at St. Bartholomew the Less:
18 Apr 1646, John North Esq. and the Lady Anne Bosville, widow of Sir Leonard Bosville."

I have no doubt that this John North is the 1612 son of Dudley and the transcriber thought the same as he saw fit to enter the following note: "John North, son of Dudley 3rd Lord North (1581-1666) and brother to Dorothy North who married 4 Jan 1624 at St. Giles Cripplegate to Richard Lennard, 13 Lord Dacre of Chevening Kent and Hurstmonceau, Sussex, married firstly, 1634 at Kirtling, Sara, widow of Charles Drury of Rougham, Suffolk who she had married 1631 at Great Bealings, the daughter of Henry Seckford. Lady Anne Bosville, daughter of Sir Thomas Ridley, etc, etc. et al"

So, perhaps we can spend our time looking for the real John North of Farmington.
