About John W Norton, Sr.

Sarah, Karen and Ofir,

John Norton needs to be removed as a son of William Norton. John was probably the son of the Alexander Norton, who died in Prince George's County in October of 1774, but no proof. In all likelihood, Alexander and William Norton, Sr. were brothers, appearing in records together, but John was NOT the son of William Norton, Senior. John's son, Henry Wilson Norton, who was baptized in 1766, married William's daughter, Frances Norton, this is documented. Frances was probably Henry's first cousin, but certainly not his aunt.

There is much confusion regarding this John Norton, who was born about 1740, probably in Maryland.

  1. He was NOT the John Norton, Sr,, who along with five sons, moved to Bourbon Co., Kentucky.
  2. He was NOT a son or grandson of William Norton, Sr., b1716.
  3. He was NOT the John Norton who married Ann Ruddle.
  4. There is NO evidence his wife Elizabeth's maiden name was West.

These four points have been widely circulated online and have even been submitted to Ancestry.com and the Church of Latter Day Saints. More likely, Elizabeth's maiden name could have been Wilson, as an older Wilson man is listed next door to them in 1776 and Elizabeth did name a son Henry Wilson, but this is just speculation on my part, not a proven fact.

John and Elizabeth are listed on the 1776 Census of Prince George's County, Maryland. They are again listed in records of Prince George's County when two of their children are baptized.

John moved his family to Pittsylvania County, along with other Norton kin. There he married a second time to Agness Gammon in April 1781. No day on the month is given in the record.
