The son Lewis was among the first group of students to attend the South African College on its foundation in 1829, and was killed in the Seventh Kaffir War. The son Joshua, a most eccentric character, later joined the Forty-niners in California, and from 1859 to his death in 1880 'reigned' as 'Emperor of the United States' at San Francisco. See A. S. Lane's 'Emperor Norton' (Caldwell, U. S. A., 1939).
