About John Walton Nuckolls
John Nuckolls was in Hardeman Co., TN. in Dec 1842 when he was given possession care, control and management of Dolly Vaughn's two children, Lucretia and Thomas Benton. There was no last name mentioned for the children in the document. It is said that Dolly Vaughan and John Knuckolls were married in an Indian ceremony and as the children were listed as Indian they had no rights, but by going to court to make these two children his legal heirs, they would have the same rights as John. (no proof has been found to support the story, but the Articles of Agreement are on file in Hardeman Co.)
John and Dolly were the parents of Lucretia Nuckolls who married Nathaniel R. Dorris; Peter Thomas Benton Nuckolls who married Mary Emaline Newkirk; Elizabeth Nuckolls (my husband's great-grandmother) who married David Wilson Barber; William Washington Nuckolls who married Amanda Barber; John Franklin Nuckolls who married Martha Jane Padgett; Amanda P. Nuckolls who married Allen Barber and Dolly F. Nuckolls (I have not been able to find any information on Dolly and she may have been the same child as Amanda, just don't know.)
On the 1880 Madison Co., Ark. census, John Knuckolls was with living with his daughter Amanda and her family. Amanda and Elizabeth married Barber brothers.
