Spurious Pedigree

The research tracing the Ogden family to Bradley Plain, Hampshire appears to be a hoax perpetrated by a genealogist at the turn of the century. The source is attributed as parish registers, but there is no record of a Bradley Plain.

John Ogden was baptized on 10 July 1625 ("John the sonne of Richard Ogden") at the Church of All Saints in Bingley, Yorkshire, England, a son of Richard Ogden and Ellen Lupton.

John Ogden died on 7 August 1682 in Rye, Westchester County, New York. In addition to his land in Rye, he held property in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, where letters of administration were granted to his widow Judith on 6 September 1682.

He was often referred to posthumously as "John Ogden of Rye" in order to distinguish him from his uncle and contemporary, "John Ogden the Pilgrim" who appears in many of the same records in Connecticut and New York (as "Mr. John Ogden"), but who died in Elizabethtown, Essex County, East Jersey (present-day Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey)

Judith Budd was baptized on 6 March 1635[/36] at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Felpham, Sussex, England (50.790722, -0.654545), a daughter of John Budd and Katherine Butcher.She arrived in Boston on 26 June 1637 on the Hector with her parents and siblings.

She married

  • (1) John Ogden in 1655 in Southold, and
  • (2) Francis Brown in 1683 in Rye.

Mother of eight children with her first husband.

John Ogden and Judith Budd were the parents of the following children.

In 1674 he was deputy for Rye to the General Court at Hartford. In 1678 he had several allotments here, as well as a tract of land on Budd's Neck which he had received from his wife's father. His house lot was at the upper end of the town, ... . In 1670 the town made a grant to 'John Ogden of 48 or 50 acres of land by the water side at the fishing rock for the purpose of building a house, and wharf. The inhabitants of Peningoe the town authorized John Ogden and Gorge Kniffen to purchase a barrel of powder and three hundred weight of lead of Mr. Budd of Fairfield, or wherever it can be obtained the cheapest. These to be kept for the use of the town. (Rye Rec., in Bolton, vol. ii, p. 47.) Ogden died in 1693. He left a widow, who in the same year married Francis Brown, of Rye, previously of Stamford. Ogden had three sons, Joseph, Richard, and David.

Biography

This John Ogden was one of the petitioners to King Charles II. for the charter of Connecticut, and in 1674-5 was deputy Governor of the state.

He was instrumental in settling the dispute about the boundary line between New York and Connecticut, and in many ways is shown to have been an important member of the Colony and in the confidence of the people. There. appears to be no record of his death, but the inventory of his estate was exhibited to the Probate Court at Fairfield, by his widow Judith, on Aug. 7, 1682

His descendants are numerous, and their record worthy of being preserved.

Comments: the pedigree / date and place of birth in this source seems no longer accepted. "NOTE: Anything from the Wheeler genealogy for any ancestors prior to John and Jane Ogden is basically fraudulent. All research on English ancestors was done by a hired "expert," not Wheeler himself, and was later discovered to be completely made up by that researcher. There is no "Bradley Plain, Hampshire," in England! However, research on American ancestors is basically valid.”===

John Ogden born Bradley Plain, Hampshire, England on Sept 3, 1600. [SIC] Died bef. Aug 7, 1682, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA at about 81 years of age.

He was married twice.

1. Ann Richardson on May 4, 1627 daughter of Joseph Richardson in Bradley Plain, Hampshire, England.

2. Judith Budd on April 19, 1638 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA. She was born in 1622.

On December 13, 1640, English settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts purchased from the Indians, Aagwam, or Southampton, Long Island. Among the settlers were John Gosmer, John Woodruff, Henry Pierson, the Reverend Abraham Pierson and John Ogden.

March 31, 1650 John Ogden was elected freeman in Southampton.

William Paine, died 1654 in Southampton. Will inventoried by John Ogden, who had permission to settle 6 families in the area north of Southampton, now called North Haven

1663 August this 17th: "I John Ogden of Northampton on Long Island... in the bounds of Southampton..."

In a deposition made by Richard Webb, Nov.22, 1667, John Ogden is called son of John Budd.

ACW note: Judith's father John Budd 1 had purchased land in Rye from the Indians in 1661 and he moved there from Southold, keeping some of his Southold lands.

1672, Judith (Budd) Ogden presented the inventory of his (John Ogden's) estate to the Probate Court at Fairfield. [ Judith Budd was born ca. 1630 - 1640. Her father, John Budd 1 died in the "Township of Rye, County of Fairfield, Colony of Connecticut" between 1669-1673) ]

Judith (Budd) Ogden then married Francis Brown.

He removed to Rippowam, New Haven Colony (present-day Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut) by 1641 with his father.

Removed to Heemsteede, New Netherland (present-day Hempstead, Nassau County, New York) with his father in 1644.

Jury member in Southampton, Connecticut Colony (present-day Southampton, Suffolk County, New York) in January 1655.

Sold his property in Southampton on 12 April 1664 to his uncle, Mr. John Ogden ("The Pilgrim").

Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut by 1666.

Deputy governor for Rye to the General Court of Connecticut sitting at Hartford in 1674. Assistant governor of the Colony of Connecticut in 1675.

Granted by the town of Rye about 50 acres of land along the waterside at Fishing Rock, for the purpose of building a house and wharf, in 1679. Granted 20 acres of land for a pasture in May 1682. Other land holdings in Rye included orchards on the east side of Blind Brook and salt meadow on the east side of Mill Creek.

John Ogden died on 7 August 1682 in Rye, Westchester County, New York. In addition to his land in Rye, he held property in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, where letters of administration were granted to his widow Judith on 6 September 1682.

An entry from the family bible of Daniel Ogden [Jr.] of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania (great-grandson of John Ogden [1625 — 1682]) reads as follows:

"Daniel Ogden died November 30, 1819, who was the son of Daniel Ogden, Sr., who was the son of Richard Ogden, who was the son of John Ogden from Yorkshire, England."
