Biography by Robert M. Gerrity:[4]
JOHN PAINE, (John, Ralph), was born in Freetown and died in a shipwreck on the Tucanuck shoals near Martha's Vineyard. The date is given as July 1745. Probate was taken 18 June 1747. He married in Freetown on 10 April 1738 PHILIP STRANGE who was born there on 2 October 1722, the daughter of Captain Lot and Hannah (Hathaway) Strange. She was married second in Freetown on 16 November 1751 Seth Chase, and third, on 14 December 1768 in Freetown, John Grundon of Dartmouth. ["Paine," PGN[5]; Reg. 88:112[6] ]

John had a natural daughter, Sarah Briggs alias Paine, by his cousin Hannah Briggs, born in 1737. Their private arrangements to provide for the child were superseded by the Bristol County General Sessions of the Peace which at its December 1738 court required John to give bond for the maintenance of the child "so that it might not become chargeable to the town of Berkley." ["Briggs" PGN[5]; BCGS I (December 1738)[7].]

Lost in the shipwreck with John was his brother-in-law Lot Strange and neighbor Guilford Hathaway. They likely were on a trading voyage. Philip was named administratrix of John's estate on 7 July 1747. The real property consisted of the house and 30 acres of land he had received from his father appraised at 470£ old tenor.

The personal property, (purse, apparel, books, etc.) was appraised at 300£ old tenor. [Reg. 19:325, 327-8[6]; BCP, File Papers, "John Pain Jr., Freetown, 1747."[8]] Birth order of the children is only a conjecture. None appear in vital records. EWP calls son John the "second son & fifth child." However, he lists John before Ebenezer, though giving the latter a "1740" birth date while giving John a birth date of "4 October 1753", which is not possible. I have assumed the tradition EP recorded is correct; that he meant 1743 for 1753; and that Mary and Abigail married when they were about twenty years of age.

Children (PAINE) born Freetown:
i. female, d.y.
ii. female, d.y.
iii. Ebenezer born 1740.
iv. Mary.
v. John, b. 3 October 1743?
vi. Abigail.
