Paternal grandparents: Lee Palmer born July 17, 1797 in Richfield, Stanly Co., NC and Lucy Ora Stone. Married 1815 in NC; divorced 1829 in Carroll Co., TN.
Maternal grandparents: William C. Terry born abt. 1795 and Malinda Covington born abt. 1805.
Grew up in Bell County, TX. As a young man he drove cattle from ranches in the Texas panhandle to markets in Kansas.
Married Victoria Kemp Livingston on October 4, 1899 in Mills County, TX. She was a widow with three children: Harry, Amber and Genevieve. One child was born of the union, Irene Eliza. The family settled on a farm near Mobeetie, TX.
After Victoria's death in 1919 J. H. married Myrtle Pennington. They had a son Emory Houston b. May 14, 1924. The couple separated and J. H. lived his remaining years with his daughter Irene Palmer Hodges and her family.
