The inscription on Captain John A. Pemberton's tombstone is this: "CO. D - 10 ARK INF - C.S.A."

The 10th Arkansas Infantry Regiment was mustered into Confederate Service in July 1861 at Springfield in Conway County. Its members were drawn from the counties of Cleburne, Van Buren, Conway, and Perry. The unit was comprised of 11 volunteer companies; Companies A through K.

Company D was known as the "White County Volunteers" from White County, Arkansas, commanded by Captain John A. Pemberton.

John A. Pemberton organized a company of White County Volunteers which was mustered into Confederate service as Co. D, 10th Arkansas Infantry, at Springfield, Arkansas, on July 29, 1861, for twelve months service. Pemberton was elected captain of the company, and served as such until the reorganization of the regiment at Camp McIntosh, Corinth, Mississippi, at which time he resigned his commission, May 20, 1862.

He next enlisted as a private in Company H, 1st (Dobbin's) Arkansas Cavalry, and was mustered into service at Searcy, Arkansas on January 15, 1863, for three years or the war, by Capt. William R. Coody. Pemberton was elected brevet second lieutenant on August 12, 1863. He was captured in Woodruff County, Arkansas on November 22, 1864; and sent to Little Rock, Arkansas, November 25, 1864; where he was confined until May 7, 1865.

His widow, Mrs. Sarah J. Pemberton, applied for a Confederate pension from White County in 1901 (Pension No. 12383).
