I believe John's only wife was Sarah Dodd. His brother, James, married Hannah Wilson, and there is no indication that she ever married John.

John married Sara Dodd in Sussex County, Delaware. As written in the deed book of Sussex County, "Whereas John Pettyjohn, Jr. and Sara Dodd, single man and woman,

II. John3, b. about 1689 in Virginia;4 d. after4 May 16, 1759; m. in Sussex County, Delaware, May 15, 1712, Sarah Dod,3z prob. daughter of George and Sarah. He likely had John4‡ and3u Thomas4, who were certainly brothers, and either this John4 or his cousin John4 (Richard3, John3, James1) must have been the John senior who went to Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

John4, who was in all probability son of John3 and Sarah (Dod) Pettyjohn [married May 15, 1712, in Sussex County, Delaware].23 This last named John4 was in 1765, in Delaware, called “John Jr,” when he deeded land which he had obtained by barter from his brother Thomas4.

John Pettyjohn gave a deposition on May 16, 1759, in which he identifies himself as, "John Pettyjohn of Sussex County, Delaware, yeoman, aged about 70 years", He swore that he had been brought into Sussex County by his parents when he was two years old.He was born in the colony of Virginia.He lived at that time in Broadkill. His testimony was used in the controversy over the line between Delaware and the state of Maryland.This testimony establishes relationship between James Pettyjohn of Northampton County, Virginia and John Pettyjohn I and his sons, of Sussex County, Delaware.

John married Sara Dodd in Sussex County, Delaware. As written in the deed book of Sussex County, "Whereas John Pettyjohn, Jr. and Sara Dodd, single man and woman, both of this county, after due publication according to the laws of this government, were solemnized in marriage, by taking each other as man and wife, Promising to live together according to God's holy ordinance until death shall make a separation.In the presence of us the subscribers. May 15, 1712." John and Sara each signed with their mark. William and James Pettyjohn both signed with their mark. the Dodd family were Sara, George, Elizabeth, Hannah and Thomas, all of whom signed with their mark.The ceremony appears to be similar to that used by the Society of Friends; however, there is no further information about this.

John married again Hannah Wilson.They had six children.
