Notes

  • Stevenson, Porter Family History, Vol 1, p.83. This information may be incorrect as it was taken from an autobiography of Sanford Porter, grandson of John Porter. At the time of the writing, Sanford thought his grandfather's name was Timothy, not John. It's been speculated that Sanford's father, Nathan, was partially raised by his older brother Timothy, thus causing the confusion.
  • On 18 Jul 1764, a John Porter sold 30 acres of land in Hopkinton to Nathan Porter for 360 pounds. The wife of this John was named Rebekah.[5]
  • On 19 Jan 1769, a John Porter sold 25 acres of land in Hopkinton to his son Nathan Porter for 150 Spanish Milled Dollars[6], which Nathan then leased back to John on the same day. The wife of this John Porter is named Thankful Porter on the lease, and Nathan calls her his mother-in-law.[7] This is thought by Joseph Stevenson to be the same John Porter as Desire's husband.[8]
  • After his death, an inventory of John Porter's estate was taken at the request of his widow, who remains unnamed, and entered into record on 8 Jul 1771. On 5 Aug 1771, Nathan Porter was appointed by the Hopkinton Town Council as the adminstrator of his father's estate.[9]

Footnotes

[4] Desire was a member of the Sabbatarian Church in Hopkinton, and is listed as an active member of the governing commitee until 1742.
