Note: Etheldred Brantley posted guardian bond in 1782 as guardian to Thomas, John, Ben, Jesse & Tabitha. In 1785 he received his wife's portion of the estate of John Porter.

Death: 1777 in Southampton County, VA

Note:

According to court records, he left a will which was destroyed by Etheldred Brantley. Brantley then married the widow Rebecca on 6 Feb 1778. The case against Etheldred and Rebecca for wasting and embezzling the estate of John Porter was dropped. [This information comes from genealogist Mark Lowe, but so far I have not been able to verify it.]

The inventory of John's estate was recorded Jan 10, 1782.

There is some question about the father of this John Porter. It was either Thomas Porter who died in 1788 in Southampton, or of James Porter who had a son John as noted in the following deed. Both Thomas and James were the sons of Charles Porter.

Southampton County VA Deeds 1767-1781, p. 303, 20 August 1770, Henry Pope and wife Mary sell to John Porter son of James Porter, for 30 pounds, 195 acres +- beginning at a forked poplar on the north side of Tocknohunty [Toquothunta/Tockwothunty] Swamp thence N 15 degrees W 83 poles to a pine thence N 86 degrees West 200 poles to a great pine at the head of a branch thence S by W 61 poles to 2 gums by Tecknohunty Swamp side aforesaid thence down the various courses of the run of the ______Swamp to the beginning part of the survey; wit Benj. Blunt, Edmund Day Jr, John Powell

The argument if favor of Thomas as the father of John is that John named his eldest son Thomas.
