JOHN PRATER (PRATHER) enlisted early in the American Revolution as a soldier and served in the Third Regiment of South Carolina under the command of Comdr. Thompson for three years. He then enlisted a man to serve in his place for two and one-half years at which time he got his discharge and returned home to do duty in the Militia; commanded by the then Captain Andrew Pickens, cousin of his wife, Elinor Pickens Prater. On Feb. 14, 1779 he received a wound through the shoulder which broke the bone in an engagement with a party of Royalist under the command of Col. Boyd. He was in the hospital for about four months. When he recovered he entered the service again and remained until the end of the war.
