John Wesley Priest Jr. was a farmer and stockman but also worked as a well driller and carpenter at various times. He was born in Maury County, Tennessee on 25 May 1865. When he was a child his father moved the family to Obion County where he met and married Mary Inez Bell on Nov 14, 1888. Around 1910 he moved his family from Union City, Obion County, Tennessee to Rector in Clay County, Arkansas. He farmed in the Blue Cane and Oak Bluff Townships near Rector but eventually moved his family to Chilson, in the Little Texas Township below Cash, Arkansas where he continued farming. His wife, Mary, died in 1927 and was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery at Jonesboro, Arkansas. John later returned to the Oak Bluff Township in Clay County where he lived until his death on January 5, 1937 of heart failure. His remains were brought to Jonesboro where he was buried beside his wife in Pine Hill Cemetery there. He was a Christian of the Church of Christ. He was described as having thin brown hair, blue eyes and as being tall and of medium build. He smoked a pipe, was soft spoken, and good humored. He was a good hunter and hunted a lot.
