About John A Purser
It is believed that John Purser was the son of Moses Purser and the grandson of Robert Purser who died
in 1733 in Beaufort County, North Carolina. John Purser was in a Beaufort Tax List for 1779 as the son
of Moses and was relatively well off. He also had witnessed a deed in Beaufort in 1768 along with a
presumed uncle, Richard Purser.
No documentary trail other than this ties John to the Beaufort Pursers. He fought in the Revolution with
a Mecklenburg Company and was in Mecklenburg County for the 1790 census. The names he chose for
his children, Richard, Robert, David, Elizabeth, Lydia and Moses are all names which recur repeatedly
in the Beaufort Purser lines.
A DNA test program for the Pursers was begun in 2004. The results thus far of DNA tests on present
day descendants of John Purser and Robert Purser of Beaufort are identical and support the presumption
