History of the Provine Name
and some background genealogy
"Provine" Began as "Purviance"
For this early genealogy we are indebted to Stuart H. Purvines and his mammoth undertaking “The Purviance Family”. The following page of information is from his book. To give a history of the Provines, we must first go to France, where the de PurVaiance family originated.

JOHN de PURVAIANCE died in Royan, France about 1630. Two grandsons are known, Lewis and Jacques.

JACQUES de PURVIANCE and his family fled from France on 22 October 1685, ending their journey in Lisburne, Ireland. They then traveled to County Donegal, Ireland, where he settled at Castle Finn, near his cousins, the descendants of John Purveyance who had settled there in 1613. Jacques had at least two known sons, John and Samuel. As far as is known, only John accompanied his father to Ireland. Samuel is found to have gone to England for a few years, then to America at some point, settling at Alloway’s Creek in what is now New Jersey. Jacques and his son John both died in Ireland.

JOHN PURVIANCE [1676] had four known sons and one daughter who were involved with the migration to America. These children are:
1. Samuel, b. 1701; m. Lettice Dinsmore on 2 Apr 1725.
2. David, b. about 1708; d. 1743 in Pennsylvania.
3. John, b. 1712; m. (1) Margaret McKnight; (2) Janet--.
4. James, d. wp 18 May 1748.
5. Sarah, m. Hugh Carruthers
