John was probably born in what became New Bedford, Mass., where he lived as a young man. It was previously known as Old Dartmouth, Mass. He moved to the frontier village of Penn Yan, NY as one its first settlers. He was a carpenter, a shipbuilder, and a housewright, and Quaker.He built and owned the Lawrence Mill 2 1/2 miles south of Penn Yan, which was later a distillery.
He and Anna had nine children: Melatiah, Mary, Samuel, Reliance, Anna, Olive, John Jr.,
Sabra, and Silas (4 sons and 5 daughters).
His wife died in 1830, aged 75. After that he lived with his daughter Mrs. Kendig and died at her house in Benton on May 17th, 1833, aged 80. See page 76 of the pdf referenced above for a description of him.
