Luke Racey, ancestor of the Racey family of Virginia, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1773 and died in Hampshire County, VA (now WVA) never had the name John or John Luke. He was baptized as Luke, gave his name as Luke when he arrived in America and appears in census and tax records as Luke. The name John got attached because someone wrongly claimed that the first Racey in America was John and some researchers confused Luke with a man named John Race who lived near him. Documentary records should trump oral traditions that have no evidence to back them up. The 1750 birthdate at Norfolk is often cited, but this child died and was buried at Norwich, 27 Sept. 1754. Philip and Anne then moved to Whitechapel (now part of London) soon after that and named their next son, Luke, after his deceased brother.
