THE LATE MR. JOHN RAGLESS.

The death is announced of Mr. John. Ragless. the eldest eon of the late Mr. John Ragless, of Enfield. who arrived in the colony in 1838. Mr. Ragless had reached his 84th year, and was one of the pioneers of the colony. He was a miller by trade and he erected a flour mill near Gawler, in the centre of a large wheat- growing district. He soon found that the methods of working were too Blow to cone with the demands of the district, and taking Mr. Stephen Ring into partnership he erected the first large mill in that district. At a later stage, when this partnership had been dissolved, he joined with his brother. Richard Ragless, in erecting a stone flour mill at Gepp's Cross. When this mill was closed the two brothers joined in sheep farming, and took up a block of land at Yalpara, which they stocked with sheep- .After several years, during which drought had worked great havoc among the sheep, the tide of fortune began to turn.- and the flocks ?increased from 5,000 to 20.000. After spending a vast amount of toil and money on improving the station the land was resumed by the Government for agricultural purposes. During this time his sons had taken up land further north, and were in possession of old stocked runs. The old gentleman therefore retired- from business, and took up his residence at Enfield, where lie had since remained. He took a great interest in politics, and was chairman of the Yatala District Council for many years. He leaves a widow, eight sons, three daughters, and 23 grandchildren. One of his daughters is married to Mr. B. Brookman, sen., of Prospect, and another to -Mr. C. HrandiF, a judge of the Land Court in Sydney. The funeral took place at the Walkerville Cemetery on Monday afternoon. The Rev. S. Lenton officiated. The chief mourners were Mrs. Ragless (widow), Mesrs. G. J., R. V., B. E., T. J., and II.
