OLD COLONISTS. -Mr. T. R. Bowman recently presented to the Board of Governors of the Public Library, Museum, and Art Gallery of South Australia two framed groups of photographs of South Australian old colonists. One is of men and the other of women, and both collections were made by Mr. H. Jones, who is still alive (1910).

Emanuel Soloman, host of banquet
State Library of South Australia, SLSA: B 2767

Mr. Emanuel Solomon gave a banquet in the Adelaide Town Hall on December 28, 1871, to all the colonists who arrived before 1841. Mr. Duryea, the photographer, took portraits of those who attended, numbering about 520. These were grouped, but unfortunately the picture was damaged by fire when Mr. Duryea’s establishment was burnt down. The late Mr. C. H. Hussey, of Port Elliot, purchased it, and in 1894 presented it to the Public Library. The groups taken by Mr. Jones, however, are now hung in the vestibule of the library. An index has been compiled by Mr. W. H. Ifould (librarian), giving the initials, surnames, the names of the ships, and the dates of their arrival in South Australia. It is suspected, however, that many of the names are incorrectly spelt. The librarian would therefore be glad to receive information of errors, full Christian names, and where not already mentioned, the date of arrival and the name of the ship in which any of the colonists arrived. The pictures are of great interest to a large number of people, because in years to come descendants of these old colonists will be proud to claim that their forefathers came out in one of Australia’s “Mayflowers.” There are about 450 men and the same number of women, but it is exceedingly difficult to secure the names of the women.

NB: This project IS the source, the original newspaper article will be uploaded in due course. This is a "Geni Special Collection" project, meaning that it ONLY refers to people who attended this banquet, they, by their own mouths gave the information about the year and voyage that they arrived in South Australia. To offer any other source, that is derived from 3rd hand information would severely depreciate this project.
