John Randall, I

There is conflicting information on the parentage of John Randall. Some of this information is presented below. Some sources indicate his father, Matthew Randall, was a mayor of Bath England. Other sources indicate Matthew was a minister or priest.

John was born on Monday, 28 May 1629 at Bath, Somersetshire, England. He was the son of Matthew Randall II and "Elizabeth Moorefield" (see note that follows). John married Elizabeth Morton circa 1664 at England. John moved to London so he could become a silk manufacturer. In the troublesome reign of Charles II, owing to the plague, the fire of London (1666) & a report of Dutch invasion, John with his wife and baby left Clerkenwell, Saint James Parish, London in 1667 & followed Elizabeth's brother, Sir William Morton to America. They first settled at Newport, Rhode Island and by 1669 was a free inhabitant at Westerly. They later removed to Stonington, Connecticut but returned to his residence at Westerly because of religious differences in the two communities. He owned about 300 acres of land. John was a farmer and is said to have belonged to the Seventh Day Baptist Church. In 1685, his widow, Elizabeth petitioned to be allowed to improve deceased husband's lands.

(note: other sources indicate that Matthew Randall II was married to Margaret Trevisa (b. c1613) at about 1738 and that John's mother is Margaret Trevisa Randall.)

John departed this life in 1685 at Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island, at age 55 years.

"-930[3] m. r. b. Oct. 26/1935 MORTON-RANDALL … Elizabeth Morton was a sister of Sir William Morton; she was born in England, where she married John Randall born Bath, England in 1629. His father was Mathew Randall, Mayor of Bath, 1627. John and Elizabeth emigrated to America on account of fire and plague in London and, being Seven Day Baptists, for religious freedom. They brought with them their son John, born St. James Parish, London. They lived in Westerly and Newport, Rhode Island and in Stonington, Connecticut, returning to Westerly where he died 1684-5. In 1667 they went to Stonington where he was admitted to the church 1670. On September 21, 1682 he and James Babcock were chosen deputies of the town to the General Assembly to be held at Warwick, Rhode Island for the colony, "on the third Wednesday of October next." They had four sons: John Randall II, born 1665 London; Stephen, born Newport 1668 [see N. E. Register Vol. 14]; Mathew, born Westerly 1671; and Peter, born 1674 Westerly… I have considerable data on this Randall Family and would exchange with anyone interested."

John came to America in 1666. (See Crowell's Scrapbook at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia) "John Randall first appears at Newport, Rhode Island, but removed to Westerly, the same state as early as 1667, where the remainder of his life was spent.

Mr. Randall was born in Bath, England, May 28, 1629, the son of Matthew Randall, who was mayor of Bath in 1627. John was a silk manufacturer in England--of Seventh Day Baptist faith, and married there Elizabeth Morton, sister of Sir William Morton, who settled in New London, Conn. (see Hurd's History of New London.)" In fact, it was his grandfather who was the mayor of Bath, not his father. Brian E. Randall, of Sudbury, Ontario, indicates in his notes that both this grandfather, Matthew Randall, and John's uncle, John Randall, were involved in the textile industry.

"John Randall.... was in Westerly, Rhode Island in 1667. In 1670 he purchased land on the Pawcatuck River from Thomas Bell and on Nov. 30, 1670 he was admitted as an inhabitant of Stonington, Connecticut. In 1678 John and Elizabeth subscribed the letter of Westerly Baptist (accepted in Church). John took the oath of fidelity to Rhode Island in 1679 and in 1682 was a deputy to the Rhode Island Assembly. "John Randall, the progenitor of the Randall family of Westerly, Rhode Island and Stonington (Pawcatuck) City first appeared at Newport, Rhode Island, from which place he came to Westerly as early as 1667, remaining in that area the rest of his life.... In 1684 John Randall died in Westerly, and his widow died there in 1685. Their son, John, born 1666 in England removed from Westerly, on the Rhode Island-Connecticut border, in a section known as Pawcatuck. Note: According to Joyce K. Lundin who wrote a book on John Randall, James is not in the descendancy of John Randall (1629-1685).

"John Randall was said by earlier researchers to have been the son of Matthew Randall, Mayor of Bath. This is an error. The will of Matthew Randall of Bath, who married Agnes Cullen on April 16, 1596 at Bath Abbey, is on file in the Genealogical Society rooms at London, England, Boyd's Units. It names a son John, baptized May 28, 1609, who married January 6, 1647 Abigail Claxton, daughter of Ed Claxton and Judith Pennington. This John Randall, born 1609, was an Alderman and died October 5, 1676, ten years after our John Randall of Westerly, Rhode Island had left England." This proof that Matthew Randall had a son John who remained in England throughout his life appears to rule out the Mayor of Bath as the father of John of Westerly. Notes for JOHN (II) RANDALL, JR.:

John Randall lived with his father in Westerly, on 300 acres of land along the Pawcatuck River purchased from Thomas Bell of Stonington, until he reached manhood when he came to Stonington and bought large tracts of land, which was intersected by the society line that divided the town of Stonington into two religious societies in 1721. Mr. Randall was a farmer and as such reduced his land grants to cultivation which he industriously and successfully improved during the remainder of his life. The Randall land was about four miles northeast of Stonington Borough, known as Angwilla and considered the finest land of the town. These lands join on the north the lands of Thomas Brown, and have been in the Randall name as late as 1875. Elias Miner and his sons, now in 1906, own most of these farms. The Randall families were highly respected and progressive, ranking high in moral character, and prominent citizens of the town. The Randall land was about four miles northeast of Stonington Borough, known as Angwilla and considered the finest land of the town. These lands join on the north the lands of Thomas Brown (2), and have been in the Randall name as late as 1875. These farms now, in 1906, are mostly owned by Elias Miner (1164) and his sons. The Randall families were highly respected and progressive, ranking high in moral character, and prominent citizens of the town. John Randall is called "Captain". "Records of the Barbour Collection", compiled by Louis Barnes Barbour. In his will, he mentions his eldest son, John Randall, his eldest (sic) daughters; Hannah Stanton, Abigail Swan and Esther Palmer and his three youngest daughters; Lucy, Mary and Keturah Randall. He gave his "daughter- in-law (step-daughter) Marvin Palmer, "all of the household stuff that was her mother's, my last wife, that is now in her possession". Ezra Crary was made freeman in Voluntown, Connecticut on April 13, 1767 and was a local Methodist preacher. He was a deputy of the General Assembly of Connecticut from Voluntown in May of 1776. In a deed of October 7, 1779 Ezra described himself as of Voluntown, Connecticut and in a deed of October 30 1780 as of Wallingford. He may have moved with his father around 1778 or 1779.

[Crary, 20] Ezra arrived at Clarendon with his family along with a number of other Scotch-Irish families from Voluntown, Connecticut area.

Ezra and Dorothy (Randall) Crary and daughter Dolly Crary are buried in the Haven Hill Cemetery in Clarendon (Rutland) Vermont. "Vermont Families in 1791",

Crowell says that John Randall (who married Abigail Billings and Mary Baldwin) had fourteen children, and that he would mention two, Ichabod and Eleanor. Benjamin's wife is the only Eleanor Randall that Crowell then goes on to mention. Chute's genealogy, on the other hand, actually lists the entire fourteen children for John Randall, but does NOT include an "Eleanor". And yet Chute says John's son, Nathan, married a "sister," Eleanor. From the context, Chute could either have meant Nathan married a sister of his first wife, Mary Cottrell, or his own sister! But Chute does NOT list an Eleanor among Nathan's siblings! She would only be Nathan's half sister, and this would be a second marriage for both of them. Still, it seems unlikely he could even marry his half sister! So could Crowell have been mistaken about Eleanor's father being this John Randall? Interestingly, John's brother, Matthew Randall had a wife and daughter both named Eleanor. If this is who Eleanor Randall really was, then Crowell's statement that Eleanor's daughter, Humility Green, married "a cousin," Ichabod Randall, would still be perfectly consistent. Obviously I need some help here...more research! "John Gallup came to this country with his mother, two brothers and sister Joan, in the ship Griffin, arriving at Boston on the 4th day of September 1633. He married Hannah Lake, daughter of John and Margaret Lake, and sister of Elizabeth Read, who married John Winthrop, Jr., Governor of CT. She also came to this country with her mother, in the ship Abigail, arriving October 6, 1635, after a passage of ten weeks. He left Boston in 1640 and went to Taunton, then a part of Plymouth Colony, where he remained until 1651, when he removed with his family to New London, where he lived until 1654, when he came to what is now Stonington, then a part of New London, and settled upon a grant of land given him by that town in 1653, in recognition of the distinguished services of himself, and father in the Pequot war.

His dwelling house where he resided, was situated near where there is now (1899) an old well, in an orchard, on the farm recently owned by the Messrs. Greenman brothers, under the improvement and management of Deacon Warren Lewis. Captain John Gallup's land grant was bounded on the west by Mystic River, on the south by Captain John Stanton's homestead place and Captain. George Dennison's land, on the east by said Dennison's land and the so-called town lots, and on the north by Thomas Park's land, which he purchased of the Rev. Richard Blinman. He represented the town at the General Court in 1665, 1667. He was also an Indian interpreter. When King Philip's war broke out, although he was over sixty, age had not quenched his martial ardor, New London County having raised seventy men under Captain John Mason of Norwich, and Captain George Dennison of Stonington, Captain Gallup joined with them at the head of the Mohicans. These troops forming a junction with those of the other colonies, were engaged in the fearful swamp at Narragansett, December 19, 1676, within the limits of the present town of South Kingston, Rhode Island. In storming the fort he led his men bravely forward, and was one of the six captains who fell in this memorable fight, and was buried with his fallen comrades in one grave, near the battle ground. A complete victory was gained over the savage foe, but with great loss of life on both sides. The General Court afterwards made several grants of land to his widow and children, in consideration of the great loss they had sustained by his death and for his public services..."

"Early he engaged on the coastwise trade with his father...in 1637, he took part in the Pequot War with Massachusetts forces...Captain of First Company of the CT forces under Major Robert Treat at the Great Swamp Fight at Narragansett, Rhode Island..."

"The deeds of John, Jr., have often been confused with the deeds of John, Sr., Governor Winthrop, Jr. who married Elizabeth Reed, an aunt of John Gallup's future wife, was commissioned to build the fort at Saybrook, where he remained about a year. He was also the founder of New London. With these facts before us, it is evident what influences decided the coming of John Gallup, Jr., to New London...he married in Boston, 1643, probably at the residence of Governor Winthrop, though he was residing at this time in Taunton...this marriage introduced him to distinguished ancestry and lineage which is the inheritance of all his descendents, and of which we have great reason to be proud. It also brought him into intimate relations with CT's Chief Magistrate, John Winthrop, Jr., and the Deputy Governor, John Mason, who had all his lifetime been a friend of his father...was an applicant for a house lot at New London, February 1651 and about this time his public services began to be recognized...he seems to have selected the easterly side of the river in the present town of Stonington, where he located with his family in 1654, with the Cheseboroughs, Stantons, Palmers, Miners, Denisons, Randall s and others...in 1675, a company of friendly Mohicans was organized and placed under the command of Captain Gallup...The fort was taken, but great was the sacrifice...it is stated that he was killed just inside the gateway or embrasure at the moment the Indians surrendered or escaped, indicating that he was in the thickest of the fight...to think of this old warrior, who had seen so much service on sea and land, leaving his comfortable home, wife, and children at the age of sixty, in the dead of winter, to fight a treacherous and savage foe, and to be brought back on his shield a willing sacrifice..."

John Gallup is buried in mass grave at site of Great Swamp Fight in South Kingston, Rhode Island. A memorial stone has also been placed in Whitehall Cemetery where his wife is buried.

This is probably the John Tennant included in a list of the Polls, etc. for the Parish of New Salem for the year 1787 (Michael Tainter. "Records and Extracts from the Records of Colchester" 1964. page. 155) Presumably he is the John Tennant is listed in the 1790 census in New London Co., CT. with himself aged over 16, two males under 16, and 2 females. Adjacent were Rufus, Elias, Asa, Sylvester, and Joseph Randall, all brothers of his wife Mary. In the census of 1800 I would think he is the John Tennant who heads a household in Oswego County, New York. consisting of 1 male over 45, 1 female over 45, and two males 10-16. John Jr. also appears as a household head there in 1800. This is undoubtedly the John Tennant who purchased a 51 acre tract in the New Salem area of Colchester from Benjamin Randall February 13, 1772 with Rufus and Asa Randall as witnesses to the deed (Colchester land records. 1o:111). On February 23, 1789 John Tennant along with Rufus, Asa, and Elias Randall, Oliver Wells and Mary Fitch of Colchester, Uriah Lathrop of Bozrah, and Charles Lathrop of Lebanon and Jeremiah Mason and Nathan Stark of Lebanon quit claimed on land laid out for a highway as surveyed" (ibid. 11:297). The 51 acre tract in New Salem parish was deeded back to Benjamin Randall March 19, 1789, with Captain John Tennant" signing at Lebanon on April 15 and deed recorded at Colchester August 25. that year (Ibid. 12:28) (Notes from CT. She married BENJAMIN GREENE March 19, 1713/14 in Westerly (Washington) Rhode Island. He was born March 1691/92 in Wickford (Washington) Rhode Island, and died January 26, 1756 in East Greenwick (Kent) Rhode Island.

1657, May 16: When John was seventeen years old, he went to work as an apprentice at the Draper's Company in London. There, his uncle, also named John Randall, was a master draper. Some have suggested that John's uncle sent him to New England in an effort to expand the family's textile business to the American Colonies. However, the lack of documentation to support such a business venture makes this scenario highly doubtful. Rather, it is more likely that John's motivation was more politically than religiously based. • The details of John's arrival in New England are unclear. It can be presumed that he initially arrived at Massachusetts, as English colonists of this period typically entered New England through the port at Boston, before traveling on to Rhode Island. In fact, between 1663 and 1700, the only known settlers to enter Rhode Island directly from Europe were a group of French immigrants in 1686. John is said to have come to Westerly, Rhode Island, with a party led by Hugh Mosher in 1667, although an affidavit from fellow colonist Thwaite Strickland suggests that he was actually residing in the region as early as 1661. Thwaite Strickland had been leasing land along the east side of the Pawcatuck River from Captain Daniel Gookin, since September 1661. In October, 1666, Strickland made the complaint that several men, including John Randall, James Babcock and John Renholds, had been mowing his hay, damaging his cornfields, and stealing his cattle, over the previous three years. During a confrontation in the Summer of 1666, Strickland claims that Randall and Renholds interrupted his mowing. When Strickland informed them that he was mowing the land in the name of the King, the men declared that the land was theirs and that the King would not be so beggarly as to put royal cattle on their land. The men's claim appears to have been supported by constable Stephen Wilcox. Given the fluidity of the Rhode Island-Connecticut boarder at the time, it is quite possible that the men had no real intention of violating Strickland's rights, but truly believed that the land on which his was farming was legitimately theirs. John first officially appears in the public records of Westerly, Rhode Island, on May 6, 1667, when he made a claim for land east of the Pawcatuck River, (published in Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island). John also appears in the records of Newport, Rhode Island that same year, although there is no evidence that he ever actually resided at Newport.

1659-60: John Randall, was present in the home of his Uncle John and Aunt Abigail. John Randall apprenticed to his Uncle John as a Draper for those two years and disappears. He and he alone, the grandson of Matthew Randall, Mayor of Bath, is the one Randall of Bath that David Randall, Warne Randall, and I all agree is John Randall of Newport and later Misquamicut, presently Ashaway, Rhode Island. 1661, March 21: " . . . a private company was organized in Newport for the purchase and settlement of Misquamicut. . . eighty members of a company drew up and subscribed Articles of Agreement which were somewhat enlarged with "Acts and Orders" in July and September following. The deed and all other writings were kept in William Vaughan's house. The land was first held in six shares, by William Vaughan, Robert Stanton, Hugh Mosher, John Fairfield, James Longbottom and Shubel Painter. These sold to the other members of the company. The six original shares were valued at seven pounds each. The first occupants under the purchase appear to have entered upon the lands about the 1st of September 1661. But of those who first meditated settlement in this month, "all failed except Toby Saunders, Robert Burduck and Joseph Clarke, Jun." Others, however, soon joined them . . . " In the year 1669 the whole region then embraced by Westerly contained only about thirty families. These during this year in May 1669 by an act of the colony were incorporated and the township of Westerly received its name. Copying from the town records we find: "A List of the Free Inhabitants of the Towne of Westerle, May 18th, 1669: John Crandall, Edward Larkin, Stephen Wilcox, John Lewis, James Cross, Jonathan Armstrong, John Maxson, Jeffree Champion, Senior, John Fairfield, Daniel Cromb, Nicholas Cottrell, Shubel Painter, Tobias Saunders, Robert Burdick, JOHN RANDALL, John Matkoon, John sharp, Daniel Stanton, James Babcock, Senior Thomas Painter, James Babcock, Junior, John Babcock, Job Babcock and Josiah Clark." 1663c: I believe John Randall traveled to Misquamicut to farm the ¼ share of the settlement belonging to proprietor Lieutenant Joseph Torrey, Esquire, John and his lifelong friends John Babcock and John Rehnolds were accused of cattle rustling, corn cutting, hay mowing and general disrespect for the property and boundaries of Thwait Strickland for the previous three years. (I claim their bond of friendship since primary evidence shows these three men were the nucleus of the Sabbatarian Church at Westerly that is commemorated by a large granite monument on Chase Hill Road in Ashaway that stands today as a testament to their faith in Ashaway, Rhode Island.) I believe that Elizabeth did not join him until it was practicable, and that would make the evidence that "John II came to Westerly with Mosher's group in 1667" (Swap Yankee of Mystic) correct. We are talking about an undeveloped forest and no infrastructure prior to 1667. In Newport, Elizabeth would have been save with her parents until John made them a home. Travel between Misquamicut and Newport by ship was clearly possible as settlers moved families and supplies back and forth. (Thomas E. P. Randall, family researcher)
