JOHN REID OF AIKENHEAD

John Red in the Atkinhed (1492)

John Reid of Akinheid, here treated, was the heritable proprietor of Aikenheid in Clackmannanshire, a small estate which is located on the north bank of the River Black Devon, about two miles south-east of Clackmannan in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. He is reported to have married Bessetta Shanwell, with whom he is said to have had six children, three sons and three daughters. [A Flame in the Shadows: 16-17]

Death

John Reid of Aikenhead, here treated, is reported to have been killed in action on 9 September 1513, at Flodden Field, near Branxton in the English County of Northumberland, fighting under the Standard of James IV, King of Scots. [A Flame in the Shadows: 16-17]

Evidence from the National Records of Scotland

26 September 1492: Notification (in Scots) by Alexander Erskyne [Erskine] of that ilk, lord of regality of Alloway [Alloa], that in justice ayre of said regality held in tolbooth of Couper [Cupar] before said Alexander, and John, Lord Glammis [Glamis], and Robert, Lord Lille [Lyle], King's justices on north half of water of Forth, there compeared JOHN RED [Reid] IN THE ATKINHED [Aikenhead], indicted of art and part of slaughter of Robert of Methwene [Methven], committed in town of Tulycultre [Tillicoultry], and of art and part of forethought felony done to Joke of Drivisdaill [Drysdale], that said John alleged said slaughter to be committed in his extreme and lawful defence, and that an assise declared him to be innocent of said crimes.
