The Rinker family is large and complex. There were early Ringger and Rinker migrants into PA from Switzerland and Germany. George, Jacob, Heinrich, among other names permeate the Rinker lines. Johan (John) George Rinker.

George Rinker was born in 1751(family records) or 1752 in Lancaster PA . By the late 1750s, the (Hans) Jakob Rinker (Ringger) were settled in what is now Conicville, Shenandoah Co. VA. At that time, the county was part of a larger Frederick Co. VA.

George Rinker's first wife was Catherine, perhaps Mary Catherine. Her maiden name may have been Negley or Cauffman. A George Rinker married Catherine or perhaps Mary Catherine Negley at the First Reformed Congregation of Lancaster PA on 28 February 1771.

The question arises is did George Rinker make the 200 or mile trip to Lancaster from Conicville to marry Catherine Negley. George's older brother Jacob married Mary Keller (daughter of George and Barbara Anna Hottel Keller and his younger brother Henry married Christina Waggoner (daughter of Ulrich Waggoner). These marriages reinforce the suspicion that George also found his bride in Shenandoah County.

Some people assert that George's first wife was (Mary) Catherine Caufmann (Coffman), but I find no primary records supporting this. The best evidence for this is found in Daniel Warwick Burrus's book on the Rinker family. Burrus does not give his source, but he had access to Rinker family papers and traditions. With this caveat, Mary Catherine Cauffman (Coffman) is given as his wife in this profile.

George Rinker and Catherine lived in Shenandoah County and had children from about 1770 to 1790. George's father Jacob Ringger in his mid 1790s will listed George's children as;

  • Magdalene Rinker F 1773 in Shenandoah
  • George Rinker M 1776 in Shenandoah married Magdalene Cauffman
  • Henry Rinker M 1777 in [city], Shenandoah Dorethea Dellinger
  • Jacob Rinker M 1779 in Conicville, Shenandoah
  • Catherine Rinker F 1781 in [city], Shenandoah (Anna Catherine) m John Shaffer d.1850
  • Phillip Rinker M 19 Nov 1785 in [city], Shenandoah m. Mary Gray 1805 d. 1840
  • Elizabeth Rinker F 1788 in [city], Shenandoah, Virginia, Married Simeon Perkins d. 1840.

In his will George mentioned the following children, Jacob in Shenandoah Co. and with second wife Mary Magdalene Surber, married in 1792, Jefferson, Joseph, Sarah (Sally), Washington, Anne, and Heagle. Other sources give a daughter Lydia. (this is a work in progress)

John was born in 1751. He passed away in 1835.

George, soldier was born Sept 1752 in Lancaster, PA and he lived at Dunmore Co., VA, the part that became Shenandoah Co., VA at enlistment and he lived there until 1802 then moved to Greene Co, TN where he lived until 1826 to 27 then moved to Union Co., IN where he applied 1832. Soldier died 11 Dec 1835. In 1832 soldier referred to a brother (not named) In 1833 one Abraham Rinker was a JP for Shenandoah, but not relationship was given. Served as a Captain in the Shenandoah County Militia during the Revolutionary War. George served variously as a lieutenant and captain in several tours of duty, the longest being with General Nathaniel Greene in Cheraw, South Carolina and the most memorable being at Yorktown for the surrender of Cornwallis.
