For example, John Ruthven and his wife Isabel Park had four children, John Rivan, whose baptism was registered at Kilmarnock on 21 July 1689, Giles Ruthven, whose baptism was registered at Glasgow on 11 December 1690, Isabel Riven, whose baptism was registered at Kilmarnock on 25 September 1698, and Jean Ruthven, whose baptism was registered at Kilbirnie on 11 November 1701.

Note II: Another example is provided by John Ruthven, Music Master in Glasgow and his wife Marion Peadie who are first noticed in Glasgow's marriage register on 23 May 1717. They went on to have five children whose baptisms were registered there under the surname Ruthven, and one under the surname Riven. Moreover, the music master is noticed as John Riven in his burial record dated 15 February 1732, ad also in the burial record of his widow dated 3 March 1732.
