Mr. Hammack, was born at Flora, Mississippi, May 13, 1856 where he spent his babyhood days in the cotton fields. At the age of 19 he hired out to a rancher at Sanitona, Texas. From there he trailed through to Webo, Montana, later locating in Bismarck. Here he was married to Emma Beal, Feb. 13, 1884. To this union were born nine children, eight of whom are left to mourn his death: Mrs. R. R. Jackling of Garrison, Mrs. Talenga, Paeley Brook, Canada, Romey, Harry, Eugene, Wilburn, Irene and Jonah all of Stanton. John R. Hammock, formerly manager of the Garrison Ferry boat, later manager of the Fort Rice at the Big Bend, died at his home in Stanton on Feb. 11, death due to the flu. Mr. Hammock passed away on his twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Owing to his feeble condition the end came very suddenly.
