John Rockwell, 2nd child and eldest s. of William Rockwell and Susannah Capen, b. July 18, 1627 in England and immigrated with his parents first to Dorchester, Mass. and then to Windsor, Conn. A cooper by trade, he d. Sept. 3, 1673 at Windsor, Conn., Æ 47. He is assumed to have been interred at Windsor's Palisado Cemetery, Windsor's original town cemetery. However, if he had a gravestone it has not survived to the modern era.

On May 6, 1651 at Hartford, Conn., John m. 1) Sarah Ensign, dau. of James Ensign and Sarah Elson, b. May 6, 1630. The memorialist for Sarah suggests she was b. at Hartford, but Hartford did not exist as a settlement for another three years. Sarah d. and was buried June 23, 1659 at Hartford, probably at the Hartford Center Church cemetery, but has no surviving gravestone. John and Sarah had three children recorded at Windsor:

• i. Sarah Rockwell, b. May 12, 1653, d. Nov. 3, 1732 at Wallingford, Conn.; m. Dec. 24, 1676, David Hall, s. of John, b. Mar. 18, 1652/3 at New Haven, Conn. He d. July 7, 1727 at Wallingford, Conn.

• ii. Ruth Rockwell, b. Mar. 5, 1653/4, m. May 2, 1678, Daniel Mix, s. Thomas Mix and Rebecca Turner, b. Sept. 8, 1653 at New Haven, Conn.

• iii. Lydia Rockwell, b. Nov. 27, 1656, d. Nov. 27, 1681 at Wallingford, Conn.; m. June 24, 1680 at Wallingford, Joshua Atwater.

On Aug. 18, 1662 at Dorchester, Mass., John m. 2) Deliverance Haynes, by whom he had four children b. at Windsor:

• iv. John Rockwell, b. Sept. 6, 1663 and died the same year.

• v. Hannah Rockwell, b. May 30, 1665.

• vi. Capt. & Dea. Joseph Rockwell, b. July 8, 1668, d. Oct. 27, 1742 at Middletown, Conn., Æ 75; m. Feb. 1, 1693/4 at Middletown, Elizabeth Foster, dau. of Edward Foster and Elizabeth Harris, b. May 7, 1673 at Middletown where she d. Aug, 15, 1753. Eight children of the family.

• vii. Elizabeth Rockwell, b. Feb. 5, 1670/1, d. July 28, 1721 at Middletown, Conn.; m. Feb. 1, 1693/4 at Middletown, Lieut. James Ward, who d. Jan. 4, 1711/2 at Middletown. Six known children of the family.

Following John Rockwell's death, the widow Deliverance m. 2) as his 2nd wife, Robert Warner (not Warrennak per the Windsor VRs), s. Dea. Andrew Warner and Mary Humphrey, by whom she had three children at Middletown. Thus, the reason why at least the two youngest children of John Rockwell married and raised families at Middletown. Warner died intestate at Middletown in 1690 and Deliverance m. 3) as his 3rd wife, Nathaniel Bissell of Windsor, Conn., who d. testate in 1714. Deliverance d. intestate June 12, 1718 at Windsor, with her estate administered by her eldest son, Capt. Joseph Rockwell of Middletown the founder of the Rockwell families of Middletown, Conn.
