About John Ross McLean
Ross was the 11th of 12 children, born in a small rural Manitoba community.
He attended the University of Manitoba, winning a Rhodes scholarship to Balliol College at Oxford in 1927. Later, he worked at Canada House in London, serving as secretary to the High Commissioner, Vincent Massey.
He became Assistant Film Commissioner at the National Film Board in 1939, and following the departure of John Grierson, he took on the role of Commissioner, a position he held until 1949 when he left to serve at UNESCO in Paris.
