John Ross served in the Revolutionary war, making a tour of the south under General Greene. After the war, he returned south and made settlement in Jersey Settlement, Rowan, North Carolina. Jacob Yos served under General Greene in the war of Independence, and at its close established his home in the Old North State. Grandfather Ross was Scot descent and by occupation was a millwright, while Grandfather Yost was a farmer all his days and traced his origin back to Germany.

Samuel Ross, b. 1789 in Edgecomb Co NC, d. 1863 in Stewart Co, TN (m. to Elizabeth Summers, b. 1786 Edgecomb), was the son of John Ross, b. 1757 Tyrrell Co, NC (which became Martin Co in 1774), and grandson of William Ross, b. 1731, d. 1801 m. Mary "Polly" Griffin.

Samuel's son, James Ross, b 1815 married Martha Patsy Williams, b. 1817, the daughter of Elisha Williams Sr, b 1789 Martin Co NC, d. 1846 Stewart Co TN and Elisha's wife Mary "Polly" Reddick, b 1789 Martin Co NC, d 1866 Stewart Co TN.

Samuel's aunt, Nancy Ross, b 1767, d 1830 (sister of Samuel's father John) married Rice Reddick, b. 1764, who were the parents of Mary "Polly" Reddick --likely named after her grandmother Mary "Polly" Griffin-- who married Elisha Williams Sr.

Mary "Polly" Reddick (descended of Nancy Ross and Rice Reddick) and Elisha Williams Sr had a eldest daughter, Martha "Patsy" Williams, b. 1817 who married James Ross, b. 1815.

So Samuel Ross was related to both his son James (as his father) and James' wife, Martha Patsy Williams (via her mother Mary "Polly" Reddick to her grandmother Nancy Ross who was Samuel's first cousin).

Origins

His grandfather, William Boss, a descendant of these supposed traditional ancestors, emigrated from Virginia to Martin County, North Carolina; date unknown. His father, also named William, was born August 9th, 1731, 0. S. The maiden name of his mother was Mary Griffin. They were married in 1756.*

A further account of the family from an old family record was brought from North Carolina in 1833: " William Ross, Senior, of Martin County, was the son of William Ross, formerly of the State of Virginia, who came to this State, namely North Carolina, and settled in the above-named county. His son, the father of the children whose names are under-written, was born on the 9th of August, 1731, 0. S., and departed this life the 25th of December, 1801.

" His funeral sermon was preached to a very large audience, by the Rev. Aaron Spivy, from Job 2:17. ' There the wicked cease from troub- ling and the weary be at rest.'

" The names and births of the children are as follows :
