The inscription reads :
'Here rests from day's well-sustained burden, John James Ruskin. Born in Edinburgh, May 10th. 1785, he died in his house in London, March 3rd. 1864. He was an entirely honest merchant and his memory is to all who keep it dear and helpful. His son, whom he loved to the uttermost and taught to speak truth, says this of him : "Here beside my father's body I have laid my mother's ; nor was dearer earth ever returned to earth, nor purer life recorded in Heaven. She died Decr. 5th. 1871, aged 90 years".
John Ruskin, son of John James Ruskin and Margaret, his wife, who wrote thus of his parents and ever spoke truth, was born in London, Feby. 8th. 1819, died at Brantwood, Jany. 20th. 1900, and rests in Coniston churchyard.'
