At least ten pedigrees published by MyHeritage claim that it was John Ruthven, here treated, the son of John Ruthven and Mary Henderson, who married Margaret Wotherspoon. MyHeritage This claim is not supported by the Ruthven Family Papers, which reports that John Ruthven and Mary Henderson: "had several children, all of them dying young, save one daughter, Margaret, who died unmarried in 1817". He was born before 3 May 1748, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. His baptismal record reads as follows: "John Ruthven Mary Henderson a L. S. Death
John Ruthven, here treated, died before 5 May 1767, the date upon which he was buried at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He died of consumption aged twenty years. His burial record reads as follows: "John Ruthven son of John Ruthven Merchant [cause of death] consumption [age] 20 [years[".
