About John SOLLARS

GEDCOM Note

JS: Came to Fayette County, OH, from Allegany Co, PA, with his parents in 1808, when he was 30 months old.

NAME CHANGE: About 1846, many family members changed name from Sollers to Sollars.

CIVIL WAR: Near the end of the Civil War, 12 September 1864, John wrote to his son Samuel who was in the Seminary Hospital, Covington, KY: "We are all well as common at present. I received a letter from Baltimore, and it says that Frank [son, Franklin] had the tifoid fever and that he was perfectly wore out when he come to the hospital and that everything was done for him that could be done, he suffered but very little. The hundred day me come home a Saturday. There was a big meeting in Greenfield a Saturday, old Moody made a long speeck. We have commenced to cut corn. Corn is light generally. There has been some heavy rains which will keep the corn green for some time. Jack [son Jonathan, also known as Uncle John or Uncle Jack to the next generations] has come home and will help Bill [son William] and me to cut up the corn. We have had no letter from you since I was to see you. I wish you would let us know how you are getting along. If you can't write you can get some one about the hospital to send a few lines and let us know how you are getting. I hear you have had the chilles again. If you want anything you must try and let us know.

Your Father, John Sollars.

Of the three to go to the Civil war, Franklin, Samuel and John, only John survived and came home. He became a hermit, lived deep in the woods, but would occassionally help raise kin [Paul and Ernest Blackmore] who needed a home.
