About John Salyer

John Salyer was born circa 1810 at Moccasin Creek, Russell County, Virginia. He was the son of Zachariah Salyer and wife Mary (unk). He married three times, divorced twice and had eleven children. John Salyer died after 1887 in Johnson County, Kentucky.

John Salyer married (1) Margaret "Peggy" Jayne, daughter of William Jayne. They were underage and both fathers had to give permission for the marriage, which took place about November 24, 1828 (that is the date of the bonds, not the date of the marriage). John was barely 18 and Peggy was about 14. They had eleven children. Peggy died in 1865.

After Peggy's death, he married (2) Margaret Justice, widow of Abraham Justice and daughter of Samuel Rice, Sr and Phoebe Hitchcock. They were married on 23 April 1865 in Johnson County, Kentucky. John Salyer divorced Margaret on 4 September 1873 in Johnson County, Kentucky. There were no known children of this marriage.

After John divorced Margaret, he married (3) Elizabeth Preston on May 17, 1874. They were divorced March 12, 1881. There were no known children of this marriage.

John's last name is found spelled both with and without the final "s." Both spellings appear to be correct.
