About John Thomas Sasman, I

According to Esme Viola Kruger nee Hampshire: "First of all my grandmother was born Evangelina Georgina Suzzman, her father was Dutch, he came to S.A. during the diamond rush in Kimberley."

John Thomas' alleged arrival during the Kimberley Diamond Rush is undoubtedly an error, though he might have Dutch ancestry; there is both an 1870 baptism record for a John Thomas Sasman in Kalk Bay, and his 1920 Civil Death record also gives his place of birth as Kalk Bay. The Sasman family did, however, briefly live in Kimberley (see below).

According to John Thomas Sasman's 9 Jan. 1870 baptism record, his parents were named Henry Sasman and Annie. (Source: FamilySearch.org, "Cape Town, Kalkbaai, Holy Trinity, Baptisms 1854-1978", Image No: 13)

At the time of John Thomas Sasman, I's death in 1920 he was living in 100 Van Blerck's Cottages, Kalk Bay. The Civil Death record was signed by John A. Sasman of 1 Page Cottage in Woodstock. (this is the same address given for John Andrew Alfred Sasman's wife, Louisa Helena Mitchel, in their 1916 marriage record.) Source: FamilySearch.org

John Thomas Sasman I's grandson, Arthur David Sasman, also died in 1920; according to Arthur's Civil Death record he was also living in Van Blerck's Cottages. Source: FamilySearch.org

===============================================

In 1886 - 1895, the Sasman family lived in Currey Street, Kimberley (Source: Baptism records of Lydia Sasman, Thomas Sasman, Kathleen Charlotte Sasman, and Georgina Maria Sasman); in 1896 the Sasman family were living in George Street, Kimberley (Source: Baptism record of Charles Edward Sasman). Daniel Andrew Sasman's 1882 baptism record does not give a street address.

It is possible that the Sasman family also briefly lived in Craven Street, Kimberley, which is adjacent to both Currey and George Streets, all of which are right next to the Kimberley Hole. There is a baptism record of a Gladys Rose Susaman, daughter of John and Georgina, baptized in 1892; their street address is given as Craven Street, Kimberley.

According to Esme Viola Kruger nee Hampshire: "[Eva Hampshire nee Sasman] told me they lived in a pre-fabricated house next to the big hole in Kimberley; as the hole grew bigger so their house was moved."

The Sasman family moved from Kimberley to Kalk Bay when Elizabeth Gomez nee Sasman was 13 years old, circa 1896, according to family legend. Based on the birth and death records of John and Georgina's son, Charles Edward Sasman, the family moved back to Kalk Bay sometime between Charles' 21 Dec. 1896 baptism in Kimberley and his 4 Sept. 1897 burial in Kalk Bay.

John Thomas Sasman possibly attended the 30 May 1914 baptism of Georgina Violet Hampshire at St. Cyprians, Kimberley.
