About John Satterthwaite
John "Jack" Satterthwaite was the eldest son of Thomas and Annie Satterthwaite, born in 1895, most likely in Laurel Cottage, a small cottage in Red Lion Yard, Hawkshead. Unlike the majority of his siblings, Jack was blonde, getting his lighter coloured hair from his mother's side of the family.
Along with the rest of his family, Jack moved to the Sun Hotel, Coniston, in 1900. He lived there and stayed in school until at least 1911, according to the census, but most likely left not long after that - his obituary states that "he can claim no academic distinction", so it is unlikely he remained in school much longer than the compulsory leaving age. By 1914, Jack was working as an apprentice for Messrs. Vickers Ltd, and it is said that he joined up in the very early days of the war. He was not married at the time, and joined up with a number of his fellow workers from the area.
According to his obituary in the Barrovian, Jack was involved in many of the major battles of WWI, including Ypres and the last battle of Cambrai. Although he made it through most of the war, he was wounded twice in the last year of the war - once in April, which he recovered from to join his batallion in July, and once on November 4th, which he never recovered from.
Jack sadly did not return from the war, and died on November 7th, 1918, mere days before the end of the war. He is buried in the Commonweath War Graves in Cambrai. For some time, his grave had no inscription, as his mother could not bear to travel to France to mark his grave. Many years later, an inscription was made. His name can be found as "John Satterthwaite" on the war memorial in St. Andrew, Coniston.
