John Schaecher, a member of one of the prominent families of the Lindsay neighborhood, died at his home a mile and a half southeast of this city on Monday afternoon. He had been afflicted with cancer of the liver, being in ill health for the past two years, but had been bedfast for only two weeks.
Rev. Leo Mainzer, pastor, will officiate at the funeral services which will be held at St. Joseph's church at 9 A.M. Thursday. The remains will then be taken to Lindsay and interred in the Holy Family cemetery.
Born in Germany on May 25, 1869, Mr. Schaecher came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schaecher, Sr. to this country in 1872, settling on a farm near Henry, Ill., where they resided until 1884 when they came to Platte county and purchased a farm two miles east of St. Bernard, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Pauline Schmitz (s/b Schmitt) on January 17, 1893, and they immediately went to housekeeping on a farm in the St. Bernard community. They resided there for two years and then went to Parkston, S.D., (in 1895) where they resided for four years (1899). Returning to Platte county they purchased a farm near Lindsay and made that their home until about six years ago when they moved onto the place near Platte Center. While residing in St. Bernard township he held the position of precinct assessor for four terms, but outside of that he never aspired for political office.
He is survived by Mrs. Schaecher; three sons, George and Killian, of Lindsay, and John, Jr. at home; nine daughters, Mrs. Killian Korth, of St. Bernard, Mrs. Wm. Kurtenbach of Spalding, Mrs. Ed German and Mrs. Victor German, of Humphrey, Mrs. Jos. Ternus of Monroe, Mrs. Ed. Dohman of Madison, Mrs. John Liebig, Jr. of Platte Center, and Misses Mary and Clara Schaecher at home. Two sons, Henry and Tony, preceded him in death.
He also leaves six brothers, County Supervisor Henry Schaecher of Lindsay, Former Deputy County Treasurer Peter J. Schaecher of Columbus, Chris Schaecher of Keuterville, Idaho, Theodore Schaecher who is in Canada, Frank Schaecher of Lindsay, and George Schaecher of Nazareth, Texas, and one sister, Mrs. Joseph Kurtenbach of Humphrey.
