About John Thomas Schley

JOHN SCHLEY, b. 2d Jan. 1767; d. 31st Oct. 1835. Is enumerated in the United States Census, 1790, as the head of a farmily. Was Judge of the Orphans' Court for Frederick Co. from 1802 to 1813, and Clerk of the Frederick Co. Court from 1815 to 1835. A member of the Legislature of Maryland in 1809 and 1810. Was editor of the Frederick Examiner. m. 4th Apr. 1792, Mary Ferree SHRIVER, b. 29th Nov. 1773, d. 1st May, 1855, dau. of David SHRIVER, b. 30th Mar. 1735, d. 30th Jan. 1826, by Rebecca (FERREE) SHRIVER, his wife, b. 21st Jan. 1742, d. 23d Nov. 1812. David SHRIVER was appointed 4th Mar. 1776, a member of the Committee of Observation for Frederick Co.; and on 5th June, 1776, he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel in the Frederick Co. battalion of Col. Upton SHERIDENE. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1776, and was for about thirty years a member of one or the other branches of the Maryland Legislature. Rebecca Ferree SHRIVER was descended from Louis DEBOIS and Madame FERRE, Huguenot emigrants. In 1660, Louis DUBOIS established the Huguenot Colony of New Paltz, New York. Madame FERRE settled in the Pequa Valley, Pa., upon a tract of two thousand acres granted to her by William PENN. I. Henry, b. 18th Mar. 1793; d. Apr. 1871. In early life engaged in business in Baltimore, with his uncle, Jacob SCHLEY, and Henry SCHROEDER, husband of his father's sister. In 1814, was Adjutant of a Maryland Regiment, in the Federal service, under the command of Col. CRAMER, and participated in the Battles of Bladensburg and North Point. Was Clerk of the Circuit Court for Frederick Co. from 1835 to 1845, and was cashier of the Frederick County Bank. m. 28th Oct. 1817, Sarah Maria WARRELL, d. 1868, dau. of Dr. Edward WARKELL of Kent Co., Md., and Elizabeth HANSON, his wife.
