John H. Scott Dies At Dodson Home Saturday
Long Time Resident Had Been Active In Developnment Of Area
John H. Scott, beloved Dodson resident, died Saturday morning, December 3, at his home following an illness of about six months. During the forty-eight years he had lived in and near Dodson, he had seen the country develop from a stock area to a rich farming section, and had taken active part in its development.
Funeral services for Mr. Scott were held Sunday afternoon, December 4, from the Methodist Church in Dodson, with Minister Van Bonneau, pastor of the Church of Christ, in charge. Assisting him were Rev. Bright, pastor of the Methodist Church and W. W. Carter, a friend of Mr. Scott for many years, who paid high tribute to his sterling character.
Interment was in the Dodson cemetery with funeral arrangements through the Ellis Funeral Home.
Mr. Scott was born near Stamps, Ark., on December 6, 1854, the son of James A. and Martha Perry Scott, and at the time of his death was eighty-three years, eleven months, and twenty-eight days of age.
In 1890, he came west, settling near the present town of Dodson, although the territory was at that time a part of Greer County. On September 7, 1898, he was married to Miss Hattie Edwards, also of Greer County.
Mr. Scott has been closely identified with the progress of this area. He was among the first farmers to bring a threshing- machine to this county, and for a number of years he operated it over this entire area. In this manner, he made many friends, all of whom respected and admired him. Although he was not a leader in civic and school affairs, he was always actively interested and gave his support to them.
Surviving Mr. Scott are his widow and three sons, J. A. Scott, R. B. Scott, and H. P. Scott; five grandchildren, Perry Mack Scott, Dwane Scott, Harold Scott, Vermelle Scott and Dorothy Scott; two brothers and one sister, M. P. Scott, James W. Scott, and Mrs Elmore Dodson, all of Dodson.
Among the out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were S. B. Edwards of Fort Worth and C. W. Edwards of Olustec, Okla., brothers of Mrs. Scott, three nieces and a nephew, Mrs. Henry Neal and family of Amarillo, Mrs. Fred Moreman and family of Hereford, Mrs. Claude Gambill, and Stancel Scott and family of Hereford.
