About John Scott, Sr.

The primary source of the Will of the father of John Scott, William Scott, was written 7 December 1973 and probated on 24 November 1794 in Bedford county, Virginia. This Will lists the wife, Lucy, and the twelve children of William, with John as the fourth child after James, George and Sarah.

The 2018 Collaborative Process on the family of William and Lucy Scott was started in late May. The initial phase was to create profiles for all twelve of William and Lucy's children in order to have space to copy all of the information found on each ofthem. The collection phase used internet search to find as much information as possible, without regard for quality or support. The next phase was to use the collected information to direct further specific searches for as many sources as possible. As sources were found, the third stage of the project was to move info in the research section to the biography and sources sections. Stage four will be to further edit bio and finalize source citations. As this project nears completion, the research section will be condensed and moved to the bottom of the profile so that the biography is at the top and it is complete, while being concise. The final stage involves making necessary data field changes that comply with the bio and sources. The entire profile will then be reviewed for genealogical proof standard and an assessment of "reasonably exhaustive research."

This profile of John Scott has three possible primary sources;

 1. the 1793 Will of William Scott, listing John's father and mother
 2. Tax Lists of Campbell county, KY, showing residence 1809-1811
 3. the 1810 US Census of Campbell county, KY

These sources need to be moved from the "Research" section to the "Sources" section with appropriate citations. Other sources are being worked on regarding John's marriage, his military service and death date.

 • John Scott & Mary Scott foundon Genealogy.com< By Phyllis Bush April 02, 2009 at 09:01:25 I am looking for this family, their parent and siblings, and any other thing about them. They were from the Greebrier Areaof VA now WVA. They married in 1700's and their children were John, Joseph, Celia, William and James C Scott. The first four children were born in VA and James C was born in KY. They moved to KY on the Wilderness Road. In about 1856, when William was 3 years old, they lived near Lexington, KY. They moved to OH at the same time as their son Joseph and his wife Mary Cain. They lived in Adams and Scioto Cos in OH. I believe this is where Mary Prior Scott passed away. Joseph and family moved to Montgomery Co. IN and John Scott went with them. He died there before Joseph moved to IL. I have proof of all this but have read on internet where there was another daughter Elizabeth, this I have no proof for. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. *"The Stories" Post information on these stories to the Indian Captive message board.

I am searching for the Indian activity of Mary Prior from the Greenbrier Area of VA in the early or middle 1700's. She was at the time a young maiden of 14 yrs. Her family had been massacred by Indians and She, her mother and a 6 mo. sibling were taken by the Indians. First they killed the baby, then the mother, and taking Mary, continued on their was to their camp across the Ohio River probably into Ohio. She escaped after about 14 days and hiding by day and traveling at dark she finally made it to a KY fort, where she was adopted by an officier of the fort. The soldiers from the fort had been searching for her ,(the fort could have been in VA). Her father is believed to have been a John Pryor. She returned to the Greenbrier Area where she was said to have some family. She married John Scott from the same area. Later they lived in KY and OH. Phyllis Bush.

"Mary Prior and family"

In our family history there is a story about the massacre of a Prior/Pryor Family in the Greenbrier Co,VA in abt 1734. The story says that a war party of Indians attacked the Prior family farm and killed many family members and several slaves and capturing Mrs Prior, a baby abt 6months old and Mary a young girl of 14 years. The Indian killed the baby shortly after capture and then tied Mrs. Prior to a tree and burnt her because she refused to dance around her dead child. They then proceeded with Mary for several days about 9 crossing the Ohio River and continuing on till they reached thrie camp. When the braves left for another raid Mary made her escape and hid by day in hollow logs and traveling by night she made her way to a fort on the Ohio River. The Indians were following her and even stood on the log she was in at one time. She was bitten by a snake and doctored it with leaves, etc. but it laid her up three days. The soldiers were also searching for her, She finally made it to the river and swam across. There she was adopted by an officier but allowed to keep her name. She then was returned to the Greenbrier Area where she married John Scott abt 1768.

The Centennial History of Oregon, 1811-1912, Volume 4, page 880. Joseph Gaston, S.J. Clarke publishing Company, 1912. Marys son was William Scott, the father of Mary (Scott) Stewart who provided the story for this book. Mrs. Stewart was 91 years old, born in 1821 in Switzerland Co., IN, when she gave this account of Mary Prior.
John Scott and his wife Mary Prior (Pryor) lived in the Greenbrier Area in the 1700s. Greenbrier County, formerly Montgomery County is now Monroe County in West Virginia.
If we follow the trail left by folks researching this line and Find A Grave memorials we may be able to derive when Miss Pryor was born and when she was a young girl living on the frontier. Her son Joseph Scott is purported to have been born in 1775 (see his grave marker). If she was a young maiden of 14 when captured then it was probably some time before his birth, which would put her birth perhaps in the late 1750s.

.Probably one of the best known and most highly respected pioneers of this township, and the one having the widest circle of friends and acquaintances, is Notley Scott. It would be a long radius drawn from his house that would describe the circle excluding those who do not know "Uncle Notley," as he is familiarly called. In the days when game was plenty it was a good huntsman that killed more deer than he, and a strong man that could march home under the weight of a heavier buck. He excelled in all the games in vogue in those days requiring agility, strength and prowess, Henry Fleharty being the only competitor for the honors that had any chance with him in those days.
He also enjoys a reputation that he has built for himself during the passage of the years for the strictest honesty and probity, his word being as good as a bond. To his house still clings the pioneer quality of hospitality that makes "Uncle Notley's such a good place to visit." Uncle Notley, though seventy-two years of age, enjoys his trips to the bay, to shoot wild duck or fish in their season, as much as any of the young men, no sport pleasing him so well, unless it be playing croquet, at which game he is an expert.
Uncle Notley was born in Ohio July 8, 1810. His father, Joseph Scott, was born in Virginia in 1773, and was consequently two years old when the war of the revolution began. He removed with his parents to Kentucky when only four years old, and thence to Ohio in 1[8]06. He married Miss Mary Gain, of Kentuckv, who was born March 15, 1777. They moved to Indiana in 1823, and thence to Illinois in 1835. He died in November, 1872, his life having almost reached a century. His wife died March 2, 1857. Notley was married November 3, 1832, to Miss Sallie Betts, who was born in Kentucky December 20, 1809, and died April 23, 1871. Their family consisted of twelve children, ten boys and two girls: Preston(deceased), Fielding, Joseph, AVilliam, M. D., Reiley, Nancy, Xotley (deceased), Samuel (deceased), Sarah (deceased), Lewis, and Nathaniel Greene. Uncle Notley is one of the very few men, if not the only man, of whom it can be said that he can open and run a masonic lodge within his own family, himself and seven of his sons being members of the order. They are all members of Horeb Chapter, No. 4,R.A.M., of Eio, and two (Preston and Greene) K.T. He came to this township in 1837, and bought the claim of Harrison Brown in sections 18 and 19, where he still resides, his daughter Nancy having been his housekeeper since the death of her mother.
The grove near which he resides, and part of which he owns, has always been known as Scott's Grove since he settled there. He owns at present 485 acres of land. He was the first supervisor of this town.

One of the few sources that has been found for John Scott is the Tax Records for Campbell County, Kentucky, 1809, 1811 and 1812. Relevance needs to be examined, but one strong point if favor of this being our John is the presence of brothers, James, George and Obediah. Campbell was two counties north of Bourbon.

Looking at the history of Indiana, the Northwest Territory was formed in1787, with a white population of less than 5,000, according to WikiPedia and other history review websites. In 1800, the Indiana Territory was established and in the US census of that year, 5,641 people were counted. Settlement began along the banks of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers. Montgomery county was in the middle western area of the state and the first known white settler arrived in 1821. These facts are presented in order to show that John Scott probably did not die in Indiana in 1793 and was even less likely to have made his way to Montgomery county before 1793. That leads us to believe that the 1793 date was a "died after" date and the family history may be correct that he went with three of his sons, John, Joseph & James, to Indiana in 1823 and died there before his sons, John& Joseph moved to Illinois in 1835. (See "History of Mercer County" Lee 1918) A review of his children is outside the scope of the current collaborative process, but it appears reasonable that Johndid reach Indiana by the time he died, and that occurred between 1823 and 1835.

John's father's will was written on 7 December 1793 and John's name is in it, so his father believed his son was alive on that date. But bequeathing him one "Shilling Sterling" may have meant he didn't live close enough to be contacted. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that John was alive, but not living in Bedford county, Virginia in 1793.

The 1793 date may be the last known alive date, not his actual death date. That is why we need to be specific and showour work in this collaborative process. The discussion regarding Montgomery county, Indiana under the "Residence" heading concludes that this location is not historically possible for a death place, unless John died after at least 1821, the date of the earliest known settler in that county.
