3 April 1694, John Settle bought from William Brown, Jr., 165 acres of land on the north side of the Rappahannock and on the east side of Chingateague Swamp in St. Mary's Parish, Richmond (now King George) County, Virginia. The deed shows that the purchase price of this land, improved with houses, gardens, orchards and pastures, was 8,000 pounds of leaf tobacco.

John's will was presented in the King George County Court 5 May 1738, by is son Issac. The witnesses included William Thornton, Charles Carter, Thomas Vedion and Jeremiah Murdock. (Re: King George County, Virginia. Order Book 2, 1735 - 1751, Court held 5 May 1738)
