About John Shields, Sr

John and Mary emigrated to America in 1784 on the first emigrant ship that sailed from Belfast after the American Revolution. The voyage lasted 14 and a half weeks. The vessel had a drunken captain and was lost for weeks upon the ocean. They were in danger of starvation when another vessel came upon them, furnished them with aid and put them upon the right course. They landed at Philadelphia and settled near Carlisle, Cumberland Co., Pa. Thence they moved to the Forks of Yough, Westmoreland Co., Pa., where John Shields died in the year 1792 from injuries received from a fall from a load of grain. He is buried in the church yard of Long's Run Presbyterian church. John Shields was a wheelwright, by trade, small of stature, of steady habits, "not apt to speak, but given to much reading." He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Mary McMeans was small in stature, lively, kind, "well versed in the scripture" and a member of the Associate Church.
