The parentage of John Skinner and his younger brother James is differently recorded in two pedigrees of the family, as is the identity of John Skinner’s wife. According to the Visitation of 1623 their father was of Reigate and of Havering atte Bower (although his wife, born Jane Gainsford, is not shown as their mother), and John Skinner married Catherine, daughter of one Barley of Albury (perhaps a kinswoman of Henry Barley), whereas the other pedigree, probably of the late 16th century, gives their mother’s name as Catherine and adds that ‘Barley of Clavering, Essex, married a daughter of Gainsford of Surrey and had issue ... Dorothy, wife to John Skinner of Reigate in Surrey’.

That John Skinner’s wife was named Catherine seems to be established by the death of a widow of that name in 1545, but in default of evidence the identity of his mother cannot be determined.

James Skinner, Family and Education b. by 1489, 2nd s. of John Skinner of Reigate by ?Catherine, bro. of John I. educ. I. Temple, adm. 11 Feb. 1518. m. (1) by 1513, Catherine, da. of one Green; (2) Elizabeth (d.1549), wid. of one Bacon, (3) Margaret, da. of Nicholas Saunders of Charlwood, wid. of John Poyntz (d.1544) of Alderley, Glos.; d.s.p.1

Biography James Skinner shares with his elder brother John Skinner I the confusion as to their parentage arising from discrepancies between the family pedigrees, and the brothers themselves are usually indistinguishable in the records of the Inner Temple. When James Skinner was admitted there he was a married man in his late 20s—he had been associated with his father in a land transaction in 1510—and his maturity was recognized by his exemption from certain offices and from attendance in vacations …

Stirnet's "Skinner01" page (membership required to view without interruption) does not mention this John (unless he is the unidentified father of Edward of Ledbury). [Stirnet tracks a different Skinner line]
