John Small

John Small was born on 11th January 1832 and married Susannah Bragg in 1854, the sister of Miriam Bragg, who had married his brother Thomas Small. John was a farmer and an orchadist in the Ryde district but he spent the greater part of his life working for the Methodist Church as a lay preacher. John always enjoyed the support of his wife, Susannah, as she was in every way a Godly helpmate- a woman of a high type of Christian character, one who ever helped and encouraged her husband in every work of faith, labour and love. She was one of those whose religion was of serving rather than the taking order and her name was held in honour in the neighbourhood for she was a succourer of many.

John and Susannah had eleven children.
