About John Thomas Snelson

Thomas served during the Revolutionary War and later received Pension No. S17111: State of Missouri. Crawford County. On this 24th day of June in the Year 1833 personally appeared before William E. Hawkins and George A. Coppidge, Judges of the County Court of the County aforesaid, THOMAS SNELSON, a resident of Crawford County in the State of Missouri, aged Seventy three Years the fourth day of July last, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832, That he was born in Buckingham County in the State of Virginia on the fourth day of July in the Year 1759, as appears to him by a record which he has of his age, and on the 15th day of July 1777 he enlisted for three Years and entered the Service of the United States under Capt. Joseph Duncan, Lieut. Robert Middleton, Ensign Thomas Rany, commanded by Col. John Stuart & Lieut. Col. Elijah Clark , and marched through the State of Georgia and crossed the Altamahan River at fort Barranton and across the St. Tilleys river and St. Marys into east Florida and returned into the State of Georgia and received a written discharge at a place called Midway Meeting house, near Sunsbury, Signed by Col. Stuart, Col. Clark, Capt. Middleton, Lieut. Duncan in July 1778 making one Years Service.

"On the 27th of May, 1827, the Baptist church, named 'Honey Creek,' was organized. The 'council' was composed of Elders THOMAS SNELSON, of Highland county, and Benjamin Caves, of Pickaway, and Deacon John Hite, of Fairfield. In 1830 the undersigned [Lewis Seitz] was chosen pastor of this church and has sustained this relation ever since." --W. Little Piney Association

In 1833, some churches in the counties of Pulaski and Crawford organized an association called Little Piney. Elders THOMAS SNELSON, David Lenox and Jesse Butler were the ministers. The association was denominated the Little Piney Association of United Baptists. But in 1838, it took a position against missions, dropped the word "United" out of the title of the association and substituted "Regular Predestinarian" instead. --R. S.
